The Old Way is a vicious cycle driving the U.S. towards collapse:
These are just the averages. We know life is worse for our people who aren't straight white males, e.g., the average African American household has one penny of wealth for every dollar a white household has (Northwestern, 2020). |
The New Way heals and connects us, activating a virtuous cycle:
(A) Implement best practices in our political economy to ensure everyone is safe, healthy and educated, has a steady and fulfilling job making a living wage, feels connected to their community, and lives in harmony with the natural world, and (B) Heal the soul of the nation by creating safe and engaging conversations among people from different backgrounds, in order to develop empathy and trust, and find common cause, and enlist leaders, media and technology platforms that elicit our better angels and inspire us towards solidarity. Without cultural healing and solidarity, we lack the political will needed to enact the critical reforms needed for all of us to flourish. A is not possible without B. |
Theory of Systemic Change:
San Diego is a Microcosm of the U.S.A.
As a proverbial "purple" city, with a breadth of industry (biotech, defense, tourism, agriculture, fishing, etc.), incredible diversity (City Heights schools count 64 languages spoken), and unspeakable natural beauty, San Diego has the opportunity to lead the United States by showing what is possible when a group of diverse and committed citizens come together and create a new future.
We live in uncommon times, marked by numerous cascading crises - climate change, political corruption, income inequality, racial unrest, a pandemic and a recession. As the saying goes, "the times make the man", it can be said that the times also make the city. Who we are as San Diegans has been put to the test in 2020, and in 2021, we have the opportunity to do it differently, to build empathy and trust with each other across differences, to communicate skillfully and to collaborate on solving the issues that matter most to us.
Active Citizenship
Three organizations (businesses, spiritual communities, neighborhoods, and/or civic/non-profit organizations) will be chosen to embark on a journey together to develop new ways of communicating, bridging divides and inquiring into the numerous diverse perspectives we bring to solve our most pressing challenges.
Each organization will commit at least 12 people (up to 250 ppl) to embark on a year-long learn journey to become the types of leaders and citizens required to bridge divides, lead effectively and collaborate on our share future.
The Journey
This journey begins with The Soul of San Diego Roundtable, a live/virtual community exploration with 150 diverse San Diegans about who we are, and what it means to live, work, play, worship and celebrate together. The second step is the 2021 learning journey. The three selected organizations will complete 4 social learning journeys within your community, and be connected each other and the two other participating San Diego organizations in a private online community.
As a community, you'll experience one learning journey in each quarter of 2021:
Program fee: $100/pp/year for 12-250 people in your organization.
However, as an incentive to participate in this remarkable opportunity to reboot San Diego, the price will be offered on a sliding scale for qualifying non-profit and community organizations ($20-100/pp/year).
