Community Leadership Program (CLP)

The CLP is the foundational Unity Lab social learning journey. It equips you and your community to communicate effectively and with empathy, empowering you to build trust and solidarity with your diverse community members.
CLP Structure

Unity depends on people feeling safe, connected and aligned. It means being able to communicate in a way that others feel heard, seen and honored. It means being a good listener, speaking powerfully, cleaning up our mistakes, and expressing gratitude.

The CLP guides you to activate powerful communication skills and develop empathy and trust with your diverse peers.

You'll meet with your group over videoconference (Zoom, Facetime, Skype, Google Meet, etc.) for 1-hour every week or every other week. You'll need a computer with a camera, strong wi-fi, solitude and good lighting for these sessions.

Each of the 5 modules takes 1-hour.

In the first 15 minutes, you'll read a short article, watch a short video and complete a written reflection question.  In the next 45 minutes, you'll take turns practicing new skills and sharing your perspective on the conversation prompts.

CLP Overview

Module 1: Getting Related. You'll get to know your peers, explore your personal values, and form shared agreements for future sessions.

Module 2: Active Listening. You'll learn the most important communication and leadership skill, active listening, so that people you care about feel heard by you and more deeply related to you. You'll also explore your vision for the world and develop a draft of your purpose statement.

Module 3:
Communicate Powerfully. You'll learn the second important communication tool, "I statements", and learn to speak with others who might disagree with you in a way they can hear.

Module 4: Repairing Relationships. You'll learn the third most important communication tool - how to take responsibility for the impacts of your choices on others. This is the foundation of building and repairing trust.

Module 5: Gratitude + Next Steps. You'll discover the power of gratitude, review the skills you learned in program, reflect on the experience of building connections with diverse peers and envision the next steps on your leadership journey.

SPOTLIGHT: United States Leadership Program
USLP Structure

Citizenship in the United States is active. It is a verb. It requires that we develop a personal relationship to our nation and express our unique purpose and values through our leadership, creativity and service in our careers, community and civic life.

As with all journeys, to begin the USLP you must first complete the CLP, so that you have an understanding of your purpose and the skills required to communicate and lead effectively.

Throughout the USLP, you will move into more and more controversial aspects of our national identity and purpose.  You'll need all the skills from the CLP to navigate them.

As with the CLP, you'll meet with your group over videoconference (Zoom, Facetime, Skype, Meet, etc.) for 1-hour each week for 5 weeks. You'll need a computer with a camera, strong wi-fi, solitude and good lighting for these sessions.
USLP Overview

Module 1: Getting Related. You'll get to know your peers, explore your connection to the purpose of the United States, and form shared agreements for future sessions.

Module 2:
Living in a Divided Nation. You'll explore how bias, privilege and exclusion have shown up in your life and the lives of your peers.

Module 3:
The Impact of Division. You'll discover the key themes that create polarization and prevent us from living our purpose as a nation.

Module 4:
The Taproot of Unity.  You'll discover what about our country most breaks your heart, reveal your vision for our country, formulate a purpose statement and the next step to take on your journey.

Module 5:
Gratitude + Next Steps. You'll review the program, share how the program and your peers impacted you, and develop a plan to use your skills from the CLP to advance your vision for the USA in your life, career and community.

Mission: Unity Lab is a non-partisan social learning experience that restores empathy, trust and solidarity in our communities, empowers civil discourse, and strengthens the social fabric of the United States, in service of a functioning democracy, a safe, diverse and dynamic society, and a thriving, inclusive and sustainable economy. We deliver on this mission by bringing together diverse Americans to learn new skills and develop high-trust relationships.

Vision: The words "United States" render purpose, empathy and dignity redundant.  A WWII-scale mobilization has transformed the nation into a prosperous, sustainable, just and inclusive society with a functioning democracy. We empathize with all of our fellow citizens, have a connection to our own purpose and stand for the dignity and purposeful expression of all people in the United States.

Values:
Integrity, Purpose, Empathy, Solidarity
